ESHOTT KIDS ZONE

Eshott Village Kids’ Home Page

We are the kids of Eshott village. Welcome to our web page.

There are 12 of us in the village and we are all ages. There are lots of girls but only a few boys. We have a playground on the village green and we like to go there and ride our bikes as well. There are some great places to hide and trees to climb. We have picnics there when it isn’t raining.

Some of the kids live abroad for some of the year and we use Skype to keep in touch. We can use the webcam to show the snow to our friends who are living where it is hot and sunny.

We really like the village barbeque, especially the bouncy castle. Marianne paints our faces and you can see what we look like on the News page. The fireworks are really cool, but the little ones are scared of the bangs. It is important to keep pets in on Bonfire Night. Last year we had a bonfire and hot dogs and lots of food. We also did carol singing which the grownups really liked, but we thought their singing was a bit rubbish. We had a huge Christmas tree on the village green and looked really great and we had lights on it.

In the holidays we all go around to each others houses and play. We often stay for tea and we sometimes have sleepovers. We also play hide and seek on the green where there are lots of great hiding places. There is a little nature reserve on Bainbridge Lane and we have been making lists of the animals and plants that we see.

There are lots of wild animals in Eshott and we all see rabbits and red squirrels in our gardens. There is also a fox and some stoats. There are some dead doves in the nature reserve and we think that the fox got them. We see lots of different birds and we hear the owls hooting at night. We all love the red squirrels and we don’t want them to catch pox from the grey squirrels.

Kids’ Nature Club

The school holidays are nearly upon us and the kids of the village are once again busy with the Nature Club. All kids are members and we have special membership cards. We meet often in the summer on the village green. Some grown ups are even allowed to take part!

We will be doing our survey again in the little nature reserve at the top of Bainbridge Lane (near the junction with the main road). Last year we found lots of different plants and animals and we even found some dead ones. We have learned to look for something called ‘spoor’. This is the tracks left by animals can be things like footprints or even poo! We have looked at lots of different types of poo as part of our studies and we now know what fox poo looks like. There is lots of rabbit poo and all different sizes of bird poo. We found out that bird droppings are really wee and poo together as the white bits are actually wee. The proper words are faeces and urine

We have also seen that the male pheasants are different colours and some have a white band around their necks and some don’t. The female pheasants are a pale brownish colour. The male pheasants often ruffle their feathers up and make a loud squawking noise. We think this is like a cockerel’s cock-a-doodle-doo and is to show himself off and say that the land is his. It is fun to watch them and if you get close, the male will make soft clucking noises, a bit like chickens.

The Latin name for a pheasant is Phasianus colchicus. We have learned that all plants and animals have an English name and a Latin name. Latin names help scientists be sure about each animal, as often there are lots of English names for the same thing. For example, a plant that some us call Goosegrass is also known by lots of other names: Cleavers, Clivers,  Stickywilly, Stickyweed, Stickyleaf, Catchweed, Robin-run-the-hedge and Coachweed. The Latin name is Galium aparine.
